Southernwood Cola Recipe – A Botanical Summer Drink

An aromatic homemade cola syrup combining southernwood, citrus and warming spices, served with sparkling water.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh southernwood leaves
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups organic cane or brown sugar
  • Juice of ½ lemon or lime
  • 1 clove
  • 1 vanilla pod, split
  • 1 cinnamon stick, broken in two

Method

  1. Gently heat the water and sugar until dissolved.
  2. Add the southernwood, cinnamon, clove and vanilla.
  3. Simmer gently for 10 minutes.
  4. Cover and infuse for 30–45 minutes.
  5. Strain, stir in the citrus juice and pour into a sterilised bottle.
  6. Cool and refrigerate.

Ways to Enjoy It

Mix one part syrup with two parts chilled still or sparkling water, adjusting to taste.

Plant Notes

Artemisia abrotanum has finely divided, aromatic foliage. The ‘Coca-Cola’ cultivar is especially noted for its cola-like scent.
