Chervil Plan-9cm | French Parsley Herb Plant for Pots & Shaded Gardens

Bring the refined elegance of French haute cuisine straight to your kitchen garden. Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium) is the ultimate connoisseur’s herb, delivering a delicate, sophisticated whisper of mild aniseed and fresh parsley. Often called the 'gourmet’s parsley,' this velvety, lace-leafed beauty is one of the foundational pillars of the classic French Fines Herbes blend. If you love creating delicate sauces, elevated egg dishes, or vibrant spring salads, Chervil is the secret ingredient your culinary adventures have been missing. Its soft, fern-like bright green foliage adds an instant touch of woodland charm to any shaded corner or windowsill.
Grower’s Note
We grow our Chervil plugs with extra care because this delicate annual deeply dislikes root disturbance. By establishing it in our robust 9cm pots, we give the taproot plenty of room to develop comfortably. When your plant arrives, be incredibly gentle during transit into its final home—avoid teasing the roots apart. Keep it in a cool, damp, dappled spot, as Chervil will bolt (go to seed) quickly if it gets stressed by heat or direct midday sun.
Why Grow It?

  • Shade Champion: Thrives beautifully in north-facing or partially shaded areas where other sun-loving herbs struggle.
  • Rapid Growth: Fast-maturing foliage provides a steady stream of fresh, tender pickings throughout spring and autumn.

Growing Guide

Planting Care

  • Position: Partial shade to full shade. Avoid baking-hot south-facing positions.
  • Soil Type: Fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly with an organic liquid seaweed fertilizer once every four weeks during the active growing season.

Harvesting & Storage

  • Harvesting: Snip the outer leaves from the base of the plant once it reaches around 10-15cm tall. Always harvest fresh right before use to retain the delicate essential oils.
  • Storage: Best used immediately. If needed, wrap loosely in a damp paper towel and store in the fridge vegetable drawer for up to 3 days. Chervil does not dry well, but can be chopped and frozen in ice cube trays with a little water.

UK Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Dappled sunlight or partial shade (under 4 hours of direct sun daily).
  • Hardiness: Fully Hardy (H6) – survives cold British winters easily but will complete its life cycle inside one year.
  • Seasonality: Peak growth occurs from March to June, and again from September to November. It naturally slows down or goes to seed during the height of July and August heat.
Uses and Benefits

Uses & Benefits

Traditional Uses
Historically prized in European monastic gardens, Chervil was traditionally consumed as a spring tonic to purify the system and boost vitality after long, bleak winters destitute of fresh greens.

Folklore & Heritage
In European folklore, Chervil was profoundly associated with rebirth and new beginnings. It was traditionally eaten on Holy Thursday to signify spiritual renewal and the awakening of the earth.

Culinary Uses
An absolute must-have for Fines Herbes alongside chives, tarragon, and parsley. It pairs flawlessly with delicate white fish, poached eggs, omelets, potato salads, and light cream-based sauces. Always add Chervil at the very end of cooking, as heat quickly destroys its subtle fragrance.

Wildlife & Garden Benefits
If allowed to flower in early summer, its umbrella-like structures of tiny white blossoms attract valuable beneficial insects, including hoverflies, parasitic wasps, and lacewings, which act as excellent natural pest controllers for your garden.
