Planting

Location: Ideal for herb gardens, kitchen gardens, raised beds, gravel gardens, borders, rockeries and patio containers.

Planting time: Plant throughout spring and summer once the risk of severe frost has passed.

Spacing: Allow 20–30cm between plants to encourage healthy bushy growth and good air circulation.

Containers: Choose a pot at least 20cm deep with excellent drainage using a free-draining compost mix.

Care

Watering: Water regularly while plants establish. Once established, oregano is naturally drought tolerant and prefers the soil to dry slightly between watering.

Feeding: Oregano requires very little feeding. Apply a light dressing of compost in spring or use a balanced fertiliser sparingly during the growing season. Avoid excessive feeding, which can reduce the intensity of the plant's aromatic flavour.

Mulching: Apply a light mulch around outdoor plants in autumn in colder parts of the UK to help protect the roots during winter.

Pruning

Pinch out the growing tips of young plants to encourage a fuller, bushier habit.

Trim plants back by around one-third after flowering to promote fresh growth and prevent stems from becoming woody.

Harvesting

Begin harvesting once plants are well established, usually around 6–8 weeks after planting.

Harvest young leaves before flowering for the strongest flavour.

Cut individual stems just above a pair of leaves to encourage continuous fresh growth throughout the season.

Leaves can be used fresh or dried, retaining their wonderful aroma for use throughout the year.
