  • In the 17th century, Carmelite nuns in Paris made a famous 'Carmelite water' with Lemon Balm.
  • Cats are attracted to Valerian roots as well as Catnip, and one version of the Pied Piper legend says he carried Valerian.
  • Skullcap's hooded flowers are said to resemble the helmets worn by medieval soldiers.
  • Before Chinese tea became widely available, catnip tea is said to have been a popular brew in England.

Growing Guide

When to sow

Indoors: February to April on a bright windowsill.

Outdoors: April to June once the soil has warmed.

How to sow

  1. Fill pots or trays with seed compost and water well.
  2. Lemon Balm, Valerian and St John's Wort need light to germinate: press onto the surface and do not cover.
  3. Cover Skullcap and Catnip seed lightly with compost. Skullcap germinates more reliably after 1–2 weeks in the fridge in damp compost.
  4. Keep moist. Germination takes 7–21 days.

Planting out

Harden off and plant out after the last frost (usually mid-May) in sun or light shade. All five grow well in large pots.

Aftercare

Cut Lemon Balm back after flowering for fresh leaves. All five are perennials and will return each year.

Full step-by-step instructions are in your illustrated e-guidebook.
